John has been a lifelong resident of Spokane, Washington, for 54 years. He is the son of a newspaper editor, with an Irish/Scottish heritage, and a thoroughly British mother, a combination that has wind, rain and adventure written all over it. John’s the first to admit that for most of his life he’s endured the classic “feeding the rat” syndrome, that gnawing in the belly that wants you to feed some insane desire, such as climbing or falling in love.

John graduated from Washington State University in 1971, with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology. He continued his education at Eastern Washington University with a short stint of graduate work, before working for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. He married Joyce Bakes in 1972 and they have three wonderful children, Dawn, Jess and Jordan.

In 1973, John was asked to go on his first Himalayan expedition, a pre-monsoon trip to the world’s sixth highest peak, 26,800-foot Dhaulagiri in Nepal. His success on Dhaulagiri led to other opportunities to climb in the Himalayas, such as on K2, Makalu, and Everest. He turned his passion for climbing into a profession as a photo/journalist in 1977 and has had his photography on the covers of catalogs, books and magazines, such as National Geographic, and over the years has entertained many university groups with his multi-media programs. He is currently a Spokane County Commissioner.

John is the author of several books on mountaineering including Stories Off The Wall, Last Days, and Nanda Devi: The Tragic Expedition.
